Laptops and Macs

I wanted to record my tutoring experience in an AVID classroom before it escapes my memory, especially because it connects to course content.

I tutor in the Syrcause City School District. My initial impression on this school would be that there is little technology dispersed throughout the school.

I was wrong.

In my AVID classroom, every student had their own laptop. When I walked in, I was astonished! I couldn't believe this school had such available technology access per student. My own high school does not even have this to this day!

Anyway, these students are in seventh grade. Their assignment was to choose a college or university, and find five basic facts about the school on the website. The students had an entire block period to complete the assignment, and they could not do it. They were confused at navigating websites and discovering information. I thought students would be more advanced on a computer than I was. Perhaps this is just a fluke incident, but this was my recent experience in a middle school.

When I walked through the library, the computer lab was set up with a couple rows of Macs. Are schools supplying their students now with Macs instead of PCs? Is this something new, or is this dependent on each school district? I have never been exposed to so many Macs before. SUNY Cortland has Macs everywhere; they seem to be a big competition versus my favorite computer, the PC. Or is the PC becoming a dinosoar?

Hey Jami,

I cannot believe that every student had a laptop in that classroom! This is definitly the first school that I have heard of that has had the ability to provide so much technology. It's interesting that the students did not know how to navigate the websites and such, but then think about it: when they go online, is it really to do research? I am glad that you had a good experience and thanks for sharing it with us!

As for the questions you asked, I have no clue about anything of them. (haha!) Sorry!! But if it makes you feel any better, I also love the PC and have really no clue how to use a mac.

Wow,
That's great that every student had a laptop! None of the classrooms I've been in have that. What I usually see is students sharing the mobile laptop cart system or using computers in the media center/computer lab. I think it's great that every student actually had a lap top. It does sound like they could use a mini lesson on how to do research, or possibly a visit from the media specialist. It's interesting that the students were'nt sure how to do research on the computer, but I'm sure that they knew how to naviagate to specific sites though.

From what I understand Mac's have been getting an extra push, especially in the area of laptops, as of late. When I was looking at purchasing a laptop last fall, I was sort of directed towards a Mac as the new, and upcoming choice, but I declined since I prefer using a PC. My laptop is not a Mac.
